Abstraction of Space

As a practicing architect, William Johnson creates art as an abstraction of the built environment he has both designed and experienced. His career has focused on large scale sports, entertainment and public assembly projects. Translating his knowledge into an artistic expression has defined his current portfolio of art and sculpture.

The intent is to introduce the viewer to a new way of seeing the environment as an abstraction of space, form and color, often searching for the essence of narratives in the design of of the built world which surrounds us.

Paintings

Hand-painted paper, Japanese sumi ink, and acrylic paint are layered into abstract collages and mounted to canvas with rabbit skin glue.

Geometric forms and strong organizing lines compose the images and often suggest buildings, landscapes and horizons. The use of figure/ground relationships between dark and light color fields challenge the viewer to perceive depth, scale and proportion, thus drawing one into an abstracted environment.
